Her Take: Schwartz’s Deli in Montreal

Schwartz’s Deli in Montreal is yet another place to find cheap eats in this amazing city. The Zagat-rated hotspot’s signature smoked meat sandwich has earned it numerous awards, and even been the subject of two documentary films. You may have recently heard about this place due to its takeover by famous Quebec artist Celine Dion, but don’t let that deter you. Schwartz’s real fame comes from serving the best smoked meat in the country.

The weekends are busy, but waiting in line passes quickly. The servers are pretty pushy and ensure no stragglers are left sitting at a table for longer than need be. This is all part of the experience, so consider it a complement to be hurried on your order and greeted abruptly. These people are focused solely on delivering quality sandwiches to hungry customers.

My usual here is the smoked meat sandwich with fries and a pickle. The cost will come to just over $10 and is well worth it. After consuming enough meat to fill your monthly quota, wander the streets of St-Laurent for a bit to check out the hole-in-the-wall boutiques and shopping Montreal has to offer. I can’t stress enough how much I love this city, and street-wandering is a great way to start developing this appreciation.
