His Take: Hiking Cinque Terre

To anyone and everyone who will someday visit Italy, do yourself a favor and devote a few days to Cinque Terre. I can guarantee you that it will be one of the top ten highlights of your life.

Before arriving in Italy, I had imagined it as a place that would never cease to amaze me. And more or less, it was… but visiting in August was a complete and total mistake. This was the high season for tourists, meaning that the streets were so crowded I could barely move and on almost every corner I was accosted by a gang of desperate street vendors (if you can call them that) selling the most useless crap imaginable.

However, on the northwest coast of Italy is a series of 5 cliff side towns which seemed immune from the tourist trap which had laid claim to the rest of the country. This area is known as “Cinque Terre” and as anyone who has been there can regurgitate, you will be hard pressed to find anywhere in the world that is more rugged, more relaxing, and more beautiful. In my opinion it’s a cheaper, smaller alternative to the Amalfi Coast.

My sister and I stayed in a small little hostel perched upon the hillside of Riomaggiore, called “Holiday Hostels.” Our room opened on to a garden patio with a perfect view of the ocean, hillside farms, and the town itself. You would think that a place like this would be worth at least $300/night, but thank God for Europe, this perfect little hostel (if you can manage to 200 or so stairs to climb up to it) was only about $20 Euros/night. Unreal.

Whether you choose to laze on the rocks by the seaside or manage the steep and challenging hike between the 5 towns, you will love Cinque Terre.
