For Christmas 2012, Kyle and I headed home to Vancouver to visit friends and family, as well as remember what fresh air actually smells like. Being in “The Big Smoke” for the past year can be tricky when you’re used to mountains and nature at your doorstep, so it was great to kick back and enjoy everything Vancouver has to offer.
We chose the sunniest day to head up to Cypress Mountain in Vancouver, which is only half an hour from downtown. In comparison to Whistler, the local mountains are more like hills, so don’t go there thinking you’ll encounter lengthy runs and pristine conditions. Cypress is the place to go if you’re unable to make the two hour trek to Whistler, and if you want to save a buck or two. The total cost for the day is $60 for an adult, which also counts for night skiing for those with legs of steel.

On a sunny day, Cypress Mountain in Vancouver provides views of the ocean, Mount Baker and endless forests. While Grouse Mountain is the place to be for a view of the city, Cypress is where skiers can immerse themselves in nature and get away from it all. Kyle and I were fortunate enough to get above the fog that enveloped downtown during the afternoon, resulting in an ocean of cloud wrapping itself around the base of the mountain. The view was nothing short of spectacular.
For decent runs and a cheaper day of skiing, Cypress is one of the better local mountains in Vancouver. After you’re done, it’s only a half hour ride back to home-base where numerous pubs and bars await with ice cold beers on tap.
