Although the list of things to love about Vancouver is endless, any local would agree that the city’s sushi should be right at the top. After spending 4 years of University in Montreal with buddies that almost entirely hailed from Van City, I became enamored with their stories of “Vancouver sushi” which eventually pushed the food to legend status in my mind. This actually had me worried. I was curious to see what all of the fuss was about, but I couldn’t help but think that the sushi wouldn’t live up to the hype… like that movie that “YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO SEE” and then can’t understand how anyone could possibly stay awake after the first 5 minutes.
Sake Maki on West Broadway in Kitsilano proved to me that the hype was warranted. Living in Toronto, Jamie and I had previously raved about Yang’s Sushi Bar as the best sushi in the GTA. I still hold that claim to be true, but am a lot less impressed with what Toronto can muster for sushi, and even less impressed with the “all you can eat lunch special” for $18 in comparison with what we got at Sake Maki.
A note on the window informed us that we could order 2 Chef’s Specials ($8 for each Chef’s special, which contains 8 peices of sushi) and get a third for free. All in all, this amounted to Jamie and I ordering 24 pieces of signature sushi for $8 each. It tasted like it should have been a $40 meal. If you’re more of a “I need to see it with my own eyes to beleive it” kind of person, just look at the pictures of the sushi that we ordered, and tell me how you can beat that.

This offer was part of Sake Maki’s “Asian Lunch Special.” If you live in Vancouver and don’t make use of this stupidly good deal, I sincerely hope that I will get to slap you sometime in the near future. The ultra popular sushi joint, The Eatery, is only a few minutes down the road from this spot, but will take a much larger hit on your wallet than what we incurred at Sake Maki for sushi that is basically on par. Do yourself a favor and hit this place up.
