His Take: Bellwoods Brewery and the Best Garage-Made Beer in Town

Everything about Bellwoods Brewery wreaks cool. The huge outdoor patio in the summer complete with picnic benches, a classic white picket fence, and outdoor BBQ on which sausages are being tossed up create the impression that you’re chilling in your best friend’s back yard. The interior, an auto garage turned micro-brewery, gives off the vibe of a super chic urban loft that everyone in their early 20’s dreams of. Whether you’re on a first date, a 42nd date, or just chilling with a few buddies, Bellwoods Brewery is one of my favorite places to grab a few drinks in the Toronto.

When it comes to beer, Jamie and I both love the darker stuff. If you tend to crave lighter beer, don’t worry because this place has a ton of variety. Give the White Picket Fence a shot, we would buy it by the barrel if we could. But their darkest beer, the Whitchshark Imperial IPA which comes in at a whopping 9%, haunts my dreams. Not too strong, not too filling, just perfectly tasty.

The menu is a bit eccentric… duck hearts anyone? And it’s not cheap either. If you’re like us (and pretty much everyone else that we’ve seen in the brewery) and you lean toward the House Made Pork Sausage, it’ll cost you $12 each. The sauce that they smother it in is fantastic, but if you guys out there have an appetite like I do, they’ll leave you hungry. When you’re sitting at $24 total (if it’s your turn to pay), not including the numerous beers you’ll be downing, the last thing you want to do is order another round of sausages. Not to worry, as the dessert is perfect for two to share and only $4-5. We had the Pear and Pumpkin dessert and it was the best part of the whole meal.

With amazing micro brews, huge metal brewing tanks on full display, as well as the very real reminiscence of the buiding’s old days as an auto garage, Bellwoods Brewery has a certain charm that’s impossible to replicate. There are a ton of cool bars in Toronto, but this one is totally unique. There’s no shortage of reasons to make your way over to Ossington these days, but Bellwoods Brewery should be at the top of that list.

If you’re curious what all of the hype is about, don’t miss out on the brand new retail store that Bellwoods Brewery is opening on January 23rd, 2013. For further details, check out their website here.
